Persistence Pays Off

The Persistence Pays Off (PPO) program helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds pursue and achieve college degrees, trade certifications, and other higher education credentials. Participants receive weekly one-on-one coaching from a dedicated LSSI Case Manager, who collaborates with both Ivy Tech and Purdue Fort Wayne TRIO staff to help students set and accomplish educational goals. Students in the program receive: assistance in connecting to vital resources, guidance in overcoming challenges, and training in financial literacy and life skills.

PPO is made possible through partnership with United Way of Allen County.

Why Participate in PPO?

Research shows that students from low-income households are five times more likely to escape the cycle of poverty if they earn a college degree. Because education is a proven tool for combatting poverty and creating financial stability, the goal of Persistence Pays Off (PPO) is to assist more students to complete their college degrees or certificate by helping eliminate barriers students can face.

Advantages PPO Provides

Case Managers work with students to:

  1. Set educational goals and overcome challenges
  2. Develop life skills essential for employability, e.g. communication, time management, professionalism, etc.
  3. Enhance financial literacy

PPO Participants could be eligible for support such as:

Emergency Financial Assistance: PPO provides emergency financial support to qualified students, helping them address needs that impact their academic success, such as food, housing, transportation, and childcare.

Mental Health Assistance: LSSI provides free mental health services to PPO participants. In addition, PPO Case Managers are well-trained in supporting students’ emotional needs beyond formal counseling.

Mentorships: Led by the United Way, our volunteer mentors represent a variety of professions and provide guidance to students regarding workplace skills, professional resources, and diverse career pathways.

Skilled Trades: PPO strategically partners with Ivy Tech to support apprenticeship programs and foster engagement with local trade unions, like the Plumber and Steamfitters Local Union 166.
