EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a technique which has been very successful in helping people who suffer from trauma, anxiety, panic, disturbing memories, post-traumatic stress and many other emotional difficulties.  EMDR is considered a breakthrough therapy because of its simplicity and the fact that it can bring quick and lasting relief for most types of emotional distress.

Our brains are innately designed to heal themselves through Rapid Eye Movement while we sleep. This is why when we struggle with a situation or decision, we can wake up the next morning with a solution. Often, trauma or difficult situations get “stuck” in our memories causing us continual pain, fear, or stress. Through specific eye movements or cross-body movements, such as tapping on one leg at a time, we can stimulate the brain with targeted focus to process “stuck” memories and remove the immediate, stressful reactions.

During an EMDR session, the client may call to mind a visual image related to the memory, a resulting negative belief about self, and the related emotions and body sensations that occur. During this part of the therapy, the client follows right-to-left eye movement to repeatedly activate opposite sides of the brain, similar to what happens during REM sleep when memories are “processed.”

A typical EMDR session will last about 60 minutes. The type of problem or life circumstances will determine the number of sessions necessary. EMDR can be used in addition to other therapy techniques, such as traditional talk therapy.

Individuals, Couples, and Family Therapy

At Balance Works, we want everyone we serve at their best and are equipped to help heal your most important relationships. For individuals, couples, or families, we are here to support you.

We use tools such as the Adult/Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI) and the Nurturing Parenting Curriculum. Both of these are utilized to help families raise children and adolescents in a warm, trusting, and caring household. We believe children who are cared for develop resiliency and are better prepared for adulthood.
